The Ontario regulatory requirement is 40 hours of Security Guard Basic Training. The Ontario guidelines provide learning outcomes that are specific to the province. The training includes an Introduction to the Security Industry, and covers The Private Security and Investigative Services Act and Ministry Code of Conduct, Basic Security Procedures, Report Writing, Health and Safety, Emergency Response Preparation, Canadian Legal Aspects, Legal Authorities, Effective Communication, Sensitivity Training, Use of Force Theory and Emergency Level First Aid.
Yes, but not just any old training will do. The training must conform to the ministry requirements. For the Security Guard Basic Training it must be Instructor-led Web-based training.
As of April 15, 2010, the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services Training & Testing Regulations are in effect. This means that in order to work as a security guard, you must first obtain your Security Guard License by completing the following:
365 days from date of registration – 24 hours a day, seven days a week
