The course is based on the Ontario guidelines and is accessed in the virtual classroom. Upon completion of the training, students receive their training completion number so they can schedule their ministry exam.

What are the training requirements in Ontario?

The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services requires a 40 hour curriculum. This includes an Introduction to the Security Industry, and covers The Private Security and Investigative Services Act and Ministry Code of Conduct, Basic Security Procedures, Report Writing, Health and Safety, Emergency Response Preparation, Canadian Legal Aspects, Legal Authorities, Effective Communication, Sensitivity Training, Use of Force Theory and Emergency Level First Aid.

Is online training an acceptable way to take the required training?

Yes, but not just any old training will do. The training must conform to the ministry requirements. For the Security Guard Basic Training it must be Instructor-led Web-based training.

I don’t have an Ontario Security Guard License. What do I need to do?

As of April 15, 2010, the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services Training & Testing Regulations are in effect. This means that in order to work as a security guard, you must first obtain your Security Guard License by completing the following:

Complete the Security Guard Basic Training Course consisting of 40 hours in-class including certification in Emergency Level First Aid (32 hours security guard training + 8 hours first aid training).
Pass the ministry test provided by Serco DES Inc. (the same place you are tested for your Ontario Driver’s License).
Complete the New License Application for a Security Guard provided on the Ontario Ministry of Safety & Community Correctional Services website.

How long do I have access to the course?

365 days from date of registration – 24 hours a day, seven days a week

How thoroughly is the course material presented?

Our goal is to give security professionals all the tools they need to succeed in an easy-to-use, student friendly format. Since the program is assessment based, you will take a number of practice tests and quizzes helping you identify your weak areas so you can study to pass the test.

Is online training as effective as traditional in-class training?

Yes, in fact it has been proven to be more effective in some cases. Although you are not physically in a brick-and-mortar classroom, you train in an online or “virtual” classroom.
